Once mummy enters her third trimester, it’s time to create a warm, safe place for baby. Setting up a baby nursery can be a fun project for both mummies and daddies, as well as make it easier to welcome your newborn into your home. Here are some tips to help get you started:

Clean and Personalise Your Nursery

Clear out the room that you plan to create the nursery in. Clean the floor and all of the wall surfaces to ensure that the room is free from dust and allergens. If you plan to paint the nursery room, use a non-toxic paint that allows for easy cleaning.

Choose a pleasant colour or theme for your baby’s nursery room. You can further personalise it by hanging up framed decorations, wall stickers, and keepsakes from family members.

Prepare Your Baby Cot

Assemble the baby cot in your nursery room to avoid the hassle of moving it from one room to another. Use a firm baby mattress with a cover made out of breathable materials.

Do not put in any soft toys, pillows, blankets, padding, or “bumpers” in the cot as they are a suffocation hazard for babies younger than 12 months. A cot should be free from any objects, except for our cute babies.

Baby-proof Your Furniture

Secure any dressers or closets to the wall to prevent it from tipping. Avoid buying any furniture with sharp edges, or cover them with corner guards. Cover all electrical outlets with plastic covers.

You don’t need a changing table to change your baby’s diapers. You can place a changing mat on the floor or on top of a dresser that’s secured to the wall. An alternative to a changing mat is a cot-top changer, which can be fixed onto the cot’s sides.

If your nursery room has a window, hang up some matching curtains that block some (not all) sunlight. Do not use window blinds as their cords are a strangling hazard for babies.

Prioritise Convenience and Comfort

Consider buying a good quality baby monitor or camera so that you can quickly check up on your sleeping baby whenever you hear him whimpering or crying. That way you can get some peace of mind if you need to do some chores in another room.

Babies have sensitive skin, so make sure to stock up on baby toiletries such as PETPET® Tape diapers, wet wipes, and nappy rash cream to clean up their messes. This ensures your baby stays comfy and dry throughout the day.

Keep all baby toiletries, clothes, and diaper disposal basket within easy reach of the diaper changing area. A wiggly baby can easily roll off a dresser if you aren’t paying attention.
