Ever wondered how much it will cost to diaper your child before they are potty-trained? Let’s do a simple math.

Based on my experience, although we started potty-training early when my girl turned 2, we were not confident to go diaper-free until she turned 3.

1 – 3 months old uses about 7 diapers a day for 92 days = 644 diapers
4 – 5 month old uses about 6 diapers a day for 60 days = 360 diapers
6 – 12 month old uses about 5 diapers a day for 182 days = 910 diapers
12 – 24 month old uses about 4 diapers a day for 365 days = 1,460 diapers
24 + month old uses about 3 diapers a day for 365 days = 1,095 diapers

So for three years, that adds up to 4,469 diapers. Assuming that the average cost is about RM0.50 per diaper, you may want to sit down for this…

The total cost of diapering one child for three years is RM 2,234.50 !

When you put into that perspective, even if you save RM1 or RM2 every week will mean hundreds of ringgits saved over the years.

My husband was the one who started getting creative to save on diapers and here are some tips for you!

Put on the diaper properly!

Diapers in smaller sizes typically have more in a package than larger sized diapers. If your child’s tendency is to leak out the top, then pull the diaper up more in the front. Have leaks at the back? Then pull the diaper up more in the back. Check the package

Think of price per diaper because not every package contain the same amount of product. Two different brands may be priced the same but have different count per pack. You can sometimes save up to RM0.10 per diaper!

Tape diapers for night. Pants diapers for day

As tape style diapers are normally priced lower than pants style diapers, we use tape diapers during bedtimes or naps when our baby moves less. Pants diapers are used during the day when baby is more mobile.

Buy online

This is by far, the easiest, most consistent and fuss-free way to save on diapers. My husband constantly expounds the benefits of buying online to our friends. You are buying directly from the brand, shipping is normally free (which means you save on petrol, toll and time!) and oftentimes there would be discounts or vouchers (think 11.11, Baby Fair days, etc!).

Stockpile!

This is related to the point above. Whenever you see diapers at a low price, buy them even if you don’t immediately need them. After all, why pay full price for something that you can easily save a couple of bucks on? A couple of bucks can translate into huge savings!
